According to the report, "Bone Health and Osteoporosis: A Report of the Surgeon General", 
10 million Americans over the age of 50 have osteoporosis, the most common bone disease, 
while another 34 million are at risk for developing osteoporosis. And each year, about 1.5 
million people suffer a bone fracture related to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a silent 
condition because many Americans are unaware that their bone health is in jeopardy. 

In fact, four times as many men and nearly three times as many women have osteoporosis

to develop optimal peak bone mass and to preserve bone mass throughout life. For 
those not achieving the recommended daily dietary intake of 1000 mg of Calcium, they 
may need to take supplements to achieve the requirement.

Osteoporosis and low bone mass are currently estimated to be a major public health 
threat according to a report published in the May 2005 issue of the American Journal 
of Clinical Nutrition.  Adequate nutrition is important for the prevention and treatment of 
osteoporosis; of which calcium and vitamin D are the most important micronutrients.  

Calcium is used to prevent or treat several conditions that may cause hypocalcemia (not 
enough calcium in the blood). Calcium is also needed for the heart, muscles, and nervous 
system to work properly. When there is not enough calcium in the blood to be used by 
the heart and other organs, the body will take the needed calcium from the bones. 

Vitamin D, an essential component of osteoporosis therapy, helps to ensure that the body 
absorbs and retains calcium and phosphorus, both critical for building bone. More than 
half of women currently treated for osteoporosis have suboptimal levels of vitamin D, 
according to new research presented at the American Society for Bone and Mineral 
Research (ASBMR). The National Osteoporosis Foundation advises getting recommended 
daily amounts of vitamin D and calcium as one of the five steps involved in bone health 
and osteoporosis prevention. 

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, which results in muscular weakness in 
addition to weak bones. Symptoms of bone pain and muscle weakness may indicate 
vitamin D deficiency, but symptoms may be subtle and go undetected in the initial stages. 
Persons age 50 and older are at increased risk of developing vitamin D deficiency. As 
people age, their skins cannot synthesize vitamin D as efficiently, and the kidney is less 
able to convert vitamin D to its active hormone form. It is estimated that as many as 30% 
to 40% of older adults with hip fractures are vitamin D deficient. 

Getting the recommended amounts of calcium and vitamin D is one way to decrease the 
likelihood of developing osteoporosis. High levels of calcium can be found in milk, leafy 
green vegetables, soybeans, yogurt and cheese. Vitamin D is produced in the skin by 
exposure to the sun and is found in fortified milk and other foods. For individuals who 
are not getting enough calcium and vitamin D in the diet, supplements may be helpful. 
The average adult under 50 needs about 1000 mg of calcium and 200 I.U. of Vitamin D 
daily.

According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), high levels of antioxidants and zinc significantly 
reduce the risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and its associated 
vision loss. These findings from a nationwide clinical trial are reported in the October 2001 
issue of Archives of Ophthalmology. 

In the NEI report, scientists found that people at high risk of developing advanced stages 
of AMD, a leading cause of vision loss, lowered their risk by about 25 percent when treated 
with a high-dose combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and zinc. In the same 
high risk group � which includes people with intermediate AMD, or advanced AMD in one 
eye but not the other eye � the nutrients reduced the risk of vision loss caused by advanced 
AMD by about 19 percent. For those study participants who had either no AMD or early AMD, 
the nutrients did not provide an apparent benefit. The clinical trial � called the Age-Related 
Eye Disease Study (AREDS) � was sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI), one of 
the Federal government's National Institutes of Health.  The Age-Related Eye Disease Study 
involved 4,757 participants, 55-80 years of age, in 11 clinical centers nationwide. 

A common feature of AMD is the presence of yellow deposits under the retina called drusen. 
By themselves, these deposits do not usually cause vision loss, but an increase in their size 
and/or number increases the risk of developing advanced AMD, which can cause serious 
vision loss. Advanced AMD is also associated with a either a breakdown of the light-sensitive 
cells and surrounding tissue of the retina, or leakage of the fragile blood vessels under the 
retina. 

The research shows that slowing the progression of AMD to its advanced stage can save 
the vision of many who would otherwise suffer serious vision impairment. 

Lutein supports eye health.  It is one of the carotenoids found in fruits, vegetables and plants 
like marigolds. Lutein is also found in the retina of the healthy eye. Zinc is also found in healthy 
retinal tissue. 

Bilberry contain carotenoids and other pigments (anthocyanins). Studies suggest that the 
anthocyanidins contained in bilberry fruit improve symptoms of a variety of visual disturbances 
including cataracts, nearsightedness, and macular degeneration. Anthocyanidins boost the 
production of rhodopsin, a pigment that improves night vision and helps the eye adapt to light 
changes.

The American Heart Association estimates that sudden cardiac death causes 250,000 
deaths in the United States each year. Sudden death occurs when the heart stops 
abruptly, a condition also known as cardiac arrest.  Most cardiac arrest occurs when 
electrical impulses in the heart become rapid and/or chaotic. Sudden death most often 
occurs in men without a known history of coronary heart disease.

Acccording to the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, epidemiologic studies 
and clinical trials have reported beneficial effects of consumption of omega-3 fatty acids 
from fish or from supplements of fish oil on several cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes, 
such as all cause mortally, CVD death, cardiac death, sudden death, myocardial infarction 
and stroke. 

For patients with coronary artery disease, the dose of omega-3 (about one gram per day) 
may be greater than what can readily be achieved through diet alone.  These individuals, 
in consultation with their physician, could consider supplements for coronary heart disease 
risk reduction.  Randomized clinical trials have shown that omega-3 fatty acid supplements 
can reduce cardiovascular events (death, non-fatal heart attacks, non-fatal strokes). They 
can also slow the progression of atherosclerosis in coronary patients.  

The US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has reported that Fish Oil can help 
reduce deaths from heart disease. The systematic reviews of the available literature 
found evidence that long chain omega-3 fatty acids, the beneficial component ingested by 
eating fish or taking a fish oil supplement, reduce heart attack and other problems related 
to heart and blood vessel disease in persons who already have these conditions, as well 
as their overall risk of death. Although omega-3 fatty acids do not alter total cholesterol, 
HDL cholesterol, or LDL cholesterol, evidence suggests that they can reduce levels of 
triglycerides � a fat in the blood that may contribute to heart disease.

In a 1999 publcation in Lancet, a GISSI-Prevention study of 11,324 patients showed a 
marked decrease in risk of sudden cardiac death as well as a reduction in all-cause 
mortality in the group taking a highly purified form of omega-3 fatty acids. Dietary omega-3 
fatty acids seem to stabilize the myocardium electrically, resulting in reduced susceptibility 
to ventricular arrhythmias, thereby reducing the risk of sudden death.

The first clinical suggestion that n-3 PUFAs significantly benefited the heart came 
from a 1989 study in which 2,033 men with heart disease were given dietary advice 
on fat, fiber or fish.  After two years the men who were told to eat fish at least twice 
a week had a 29 percent reduction in death.  There was no benefit in either the fiber 
or fat groups.  Other randomized clinical trials with fish oils have demonstrated 
reductions in risk that compare favorably with those seen in landmark secondary 
prevention trials with lipid-lowering drugs.  

According to a American Heart Association scientific statement a �dietary approach 
to increasing omega-3 fatty acid intake is preferable.  Still, for patients with coronary

According to recommendations published in the Circulation: Journal of the American Heart 
Association, healthy people should eat omega-3 fatty acids from fish and plant sources to

Omega-3 fatty acids are not just good fats; they affect heart health in positive ways. They 
make blood less likely to form clots which caused heart attack , and protect against irregular 
heartbeats that cause sudden cardiac death. Omega 3 fatty acids may prevent sudden 
death and fatal cardiovascular events by regulating the heartbeat and preventing irregular 
rhythms associated with sudden death. 

During the past 10 years, epidemiological studies have found an association between fish 
consumption and a decreased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) deaths and sudden 
death in healthy men and in those with known CHD.  Short-term trials also found that fish 
oil supplements at a dose of about 1 gram a day reduced heart rate, diminished extra 
heartbeats and normalized heart rhythm in both healthy people and those at high risk of 
CHD. 

Salmon Oil contains two omega-3 fatty acids �   eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic 
acids (EPA and DHA).  People who have elevated triglycerides may need 2 to 4 grams of 
EPA and DHA per day provided as a supplement.  Even the 1gram/day dose recommended 
for patients with existing CVD may be more than can readily be achieved through diet alone.  
These people should consult their physician to discuss taking supplements to reduce heart 
disease risk.  Patients taking more than 3 grams of omega-3 fatty acids from supplements 
should do so only under a physician�s care.  The FDA has noted that high intakes could 
cause excessive bleeding in some people.

Although the mechanisms responsible for omega-3 fatty acids� reduction of CVD risk are 
still being studied, research has shown:

They were all free of coronary heart disease and had been recruited through the World 
Health Organization�s MONICA (Monitoring Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular 
Disease) centers.

Survey results indicated that nearly 25% of reproductive-age women in the United States 
had dieted. Nearly half of dieting women reported being on low-carbohydrate diets, which 
could reduce the amount of fortified and folate-rich foods they consume. These women 
have a particular need to supplement their diets with multi-vitamins and 400 �g of folic

Folic acid is a B vitamin. It is used in our bodies to make new cells. If a woman has enough 
folic acid in her body before she is pregnant, it can help prevent major birth defects of her

Studies show that people who get higher than average amounts of folic acid from their diets

inactivates circulating folate. According to researchers from Brigham & Women's Hospital 
and Harvard Medical School, higher folate intake from food and supplements appears to 
reduce the risk of high blood pressure. 

According to several medical reports in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 
inadequate intake of several vitamins has been linked to chronic diseases, including coronary 
heart disease, cancer, and osteoporosis. Folate and vitamins B6 and B12 are required for 
homocysteine metabolism and are associated with coronary heart disease risk. Vitamin E and 
Lycopene may decrease the risk of prostate cancer. Vitamin D is associated with decreased 
occurrence of fractures when taken with calcium. 

An estimated 10 million Americans - 8 million women and 2 million men - have osteoporosis.  
The loss of bone with aging is due to several reasons, including genetic factors, physical 
inactivity, and lower levels of circulating hormones (estrogen in women). Postmenopausal 
women account for 80 percent of all cases of osteoporosis because estrogen production 
declines rapidly at menopause. It is estimated that osteoporosis will cause half of all women 
over age 50 to suffer a fracture of the hip, wrist, or vertebra. 

Although osteoporosis affects people of different races, genders and ethnicities, women 
are at highest risk because their skeletons are smaller to start with and because of the 
accelerated bone loss that accompanies menopause. Adequate calcium and vitamin D 
intakes, as well as weight bearing exercise are critical to the development and maintenance 
of healthy bone throughout the lifecycle.

placebo controlled trial, in which 212 patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomly 
assigned 1500 mg oral glucosamine sulfate or placebo once daily for 3 years. 

GAIT (The Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial) funded by the National 
Institutes of Health, was designed to rigorously assess the effectiveness and safety 
of Glucosamine and Chondroitin when taken separately or in combination. Almost 
1,600 patients with painful knee osteoarthritis were recruited from 16 U.S. academic 
rheumatology centers for the study. The study, presented in Nov 2005 at the American 
College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting, shows 20 percent improvement 
in knee pain by week 24. It is also shown that that the combination of glucosamine 
and chondroitin sulfate might be effective in osteoarthritis patients who had moderate 
to severe knee pain

resistance to infection. It is used in the treatment of scurvy. 

In a research study, male smokers with moderate to high levels of lead were given 
supplements of 1,000 mg per day of vitamin C, 200 mg per day of vitamin C, or a 
placebo. 14 Only those people taking 1,000 mg per day of vitamin C experienced a 
drop in the blood lead levels.

According to the study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition 
in 1999, daily supplementation with 1000 mg of ascorbic acid showed a significant 
decrease of blood-lead levels associated with the general population.  Ascorbic acid 
/ Vitamin C supplementation may provide an economical and convenient method of 
reducing blood-lead levels, possibly by reducing the intestinal absorption of lead.  

Epidemiological studies show that diets high in fruits and vegetables are associated 
with lower risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and cancer, and with increased 
longevity. According to a research study published in 2003, higher intake of vitamin C 
for people who smoked have been shown to have decreased risk of non-fatal ischemic 
heart disease. 

A recent study published in 2004 shows reduced incidence of major coronary heart 
disease events at high supplemental vitamin C intakes.

According to the US National Institutes of Health, the general health risk of too much 
vitamin E is low. The Institute of Medicine has set an upper tolerable intake level for 
vitamin E at 1,000 mg (1,500 IU) for any form of supplementary �-tocopherol per day. 

Selenium is a trace mineral that is essential to good health but required only in small 
amounts. Selenium is incorporated into proteins to make selenoproteins, which are 
important antioxidant enzymes. The antioxidant properties of selenoproteins help 
prevent cellular damage from free radicals. Observational studies indicate that death 
from cancer, including lung, colorectal, and prostate cancers, is lower among people 
with higher blood levels or intake of selenium. The effect of selenium supplementation 
on the recurrence of different types of skin cancers was studied in seven dermatology 
clinics in the U.S. from 1983 through the early 1990s. The incidence of prostate cancer, 
colorectal cancer, and lung cancer was notably lower in the group given selenium 
supplements. The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences has set 
a tolerable upper intake level (UL) for selenium at 400 mcg per day. 

Results of a new scientific pooled analysis from three randomized trials, which included 
1,763 participants show higher blood selenium status is linked to a decreased risk of 
colon cancer; the findings were published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute 
Vol. 96, No. 22, November 17, 2004. 

In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2004, 
vitamin E is shown to induce cancer cell death, and proved to be valuable as anticancer 
agents.

The US Surgeon General reported that by 2020, half of all American citizens older than 50

According to Harvard School of Public Health,  healthy individuals who get enough calcium 
and physical activity, bone production exceeds bone destruction up to about age 30. After 
that, destruction typically exceeds production. Adequate, lifelong dietary calcium intake is 
necessary to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Consuming adequate calcium and vitamin D 
and performing regular, weight-bearing exercise are also important to build maximum bone 
density and strength. After age 30, these factors help slow bone loss, although they cannot 
completely prevent bone loss due to aging.

Vitamin D plays a critical role in maintaining bone health. When blood levels of calcium 
begin to drop, the body responds in several ways. It promotes the conversion of vitamin 
D into its active form, which then travels to the intestines (to encourage greater calcium 
absorption into the blood) and to the kidneys (to minimize calcium loss in the urine). For 
bone health, an adequate intake of vitamin D is no less important than calcium. Clinical 
trials of vitamin D for the prevention of osteoporosis found that the vitamin decreases 
vertebral fractures and may decrease nonvertebral fractures. A similar analysis of the 
effect of vitamin D on falls indicated that supplementation with vitamin D reduces the risk 
of falls among ambulatory or institutionalized older individuals with stable health by more 
than 20%.

Calcium, whether from the diet or supplements, is absorbed best by the body when it is 
taken several times a day in amounts of 500 mg or less, but taking it all at once is better 
than not taking it at all. Most published studies show that low calcium intake is associated 
with low bone mass, rapid bone loss and high fracture rates. Adequate calcium intake 
will help ensure that calcium deficiency is not contributing to a weakening of the skeleton; 
however, this is only one of the steps necessary for bone health. 

The National Academy of Sciences and the National Osteoporosis Foundation recommend 
daily calcium intakes of 1000-1200 mg/day for adult men and women. The U.S. Department 
of Health & Human Services recommends  intake of 1000 mg of calcium and 200 International 
Units (IU) of Vitamin D per day for the average adult under 50.

In the U.S., osteoporosis is responsible for more than 1.5 million fractures annually, 700,000 of

day. The average American woman and man consumes only 625 mg and 865 mg of Calcium 
per day, respectively.

the heart, nerves, and muscles, bone health, and the clotting of blood. It  also plays a role in
